Recently, I was talking with a physician-scientist who began their investigative pursuits with a Dermatology Foundation research award. They explained how critical DF funding was to launching their career and their ability to make big strides in their work. As the conversation progressed, it struck me that what they were talking about was the path to discovery — i.e., how new scientific knowledge evolves when unique, powerful ideas are pursued by promising researchers with ample financial support.
Discovery is what the DF feeds through its funding program for early-career investigators. The ultimate result of the DF’s investment is tremendous: new breakthrough treatments and a greater understanding of the full range of skin diseases and disorders. Due to consistent annual research support, I am pleased to say that this progress happens continuously.
Keeping up with the latest advances in the practice of dermatology, and the experts who are leading these efforts, is an ongoing challenge. As we launch Dermatology FocusTM in its new online format, I am reminded that the purpose of this publication remains the same: to share the latest discoveries in investigative dermatology in a practical and easily digestible format. As a result, we will continue to feature articles imparting cutting-edge scientific and clinical progress in the specialty, and highlight today’s researchers too. Their stories of determination and ingenuity are an inspiration for all members of the dermatologic community. We will also keep you up to date with key DF educational events and activities. Soon, the DF will carefully evaluate the needs of all our readers to ensure we are providing the most valuable information in the most accessible format.
I hope you enjoy the first digital edition of Dermatology Focus whether you read it online or download a PDF. As the largest private supporter of progress in dermatology, we are pleased to make this publication available to share today’s discoveries for the benefit of patients everywhere.
